Reprogramming your subconscious

Creating the life of your dreams

Our subconscious mind regulates at least 95% of the choices that we make each day. Walking, blowing on hot food, avoiding conflict, speaking up/staying silent are all habits we formed before we were seven. Changing these habits require a lot of effort as the subconscious mind is a set of programs that are wired to stay intact. This is why despite attaining knowledge by reading a self-help book the knowledge will not translate into new habits. The conscious mind is creative, whereas our subsconcious mind is habitual. Right now you're primarily using your conscious mind to read these words and absorb their meaning, but beneath that mental focus, your subconscious mind is busily working behind the scenes, absorbing or rejecting information based on an existing programs that you have of the world around you.

There are a couple of ways that the subconscious mind can be reprogrammed, the first is by repitition.

The 21/90 rule states that it takes 21 days to build a new neural pathway and 90 days to make it the preferred route. Neural pathways, comprised of neurons connected by dendrites, are created in the brain based on our habits and behaviors. The number of dendrites increases with the frequency a behavior is performed. When brain cells communicate frequently, the connection between them strengthens and the messages that travel the same pathway in the brain over and over begin to transmit faster and faster. With enough repetition, these behaviors become automatic/routine. Reading, driving, and riding a bike are examples of complicated behaviors that we do automatically because neural pathways have formed.

If you commit to your goal for 21 days it will become a habit, if you commit for 90 days and it will become a part of your lifestyle.

The second way to reprogram the subconscious mind is through hypnosis. Your brainwaves fall into a specific frequency depending on what you're doing at any given time:

  • Gamma when you're engaged in certain motor functions
  • Beta when you're fully conscious and actively concentrating
  • Alpha when you're relaxed
  • Theta when you're drowsy or lightly sleeping
  • Delta when you're in deep sleep

These brainwaves can be viewed on an EEG. Theta is observed frequently in young children. In older children and adults, it tends to appear during meditative, drowsy, hypnotic or sleeping states. In the theta state, the clarity and speed with which you can concentrate, study and integrate knowledge is profoundly improved. Because theta brainwave activity is associated with heightened receptivity, it is ideal for reprogramming your mind with positive thoughts that assist in changing habits and behaviors. Falling asleep with earphones while listening to a self-guided hypnosis session with binaural beats is one of the fastest ways to reprogram your subconscious. Binaural beats involve playing two tones at different frequencies to induce certain states of mind. You can use binaural beats to trigger alpha brainwaves.

Your subconscious mind records your encounters, just like a journal. Therefore be selective when it comes to choosing your environment and the folks you spend time with. The truth is negative people and environment will always encourage bad habits. You will absorb negative messages if you find yourself in a toxic environment. Environmental factors include social media, and news feed coupled with your physical environment. Seek only information and knowledge that can empower you, and surround yourself with positive people.

Keep in mind that the voice your subconscious mind hears most often is your own voice. So speak kindly to yourself. Practice incantations and positive affirmations frequently is another way to create a new program in your subconscious.
